Next: see China mills we hold a product record for, then pick the capability you need. This is not a quote, and it does not name a mill for you.
See mills with product recordsWhat makes up landed cost — and what you cannot calculate yourself
The useful column is the right-hand one. Every “Ask the mill” line belongs on the purchase request.
| Cost item | Can you calculate it yourself? |
|---|---|
| Aluminum ingot | Public sources exist |
| Processing (extrusion) | Ask the mill |
| Surface finish | Ask the mill (about 10–30% of total cost in public discussion, not a quote) |
| Die / tooling | Ask the mill (and first ask whether a die already exists) |
| Secondary work (cut-to-length / punching / deburr) | Ask the mill |
| Packing | Ask the mill |
| Ocean freight + insurance | Can be estimated |
| Import duty + VAT | Look up by destination country and HS code |
| Port charges + customs brokerage + inland haulage | Can be estimated |
Three costs buyers miss
These three come from real buyer threads. They decide whether a “all-in” number still surprises you after the goods land.
DDP on paper means the seller pays every charge to your door. In practice the cover is set by the contract wording and by whether the HS code used at customs is the right one. A US buyer negotiating DDP on Chinese aluminum windows was quoted an all-in price under one HS code; another party then warned that anti-dumping can still fall due after landing, and the mill will say that bill is yours. If customs classifies the goods differently, the extra tax often comes back to the buyer. Ask the mill: which taxes does the DDP quote include? Which HS code will be used at customs? If customs uses a different heading and extra duty arises, who pays? Is that in writing?
Chinese mills typically quote “ingot + processing”, and the ingot part is usually settled at the spot average on the order date. The same mill’s unit price therefore moves when the metal moves. Ask the mill: fixed price or floating? If floating, which exchange and which day’s price? How long is the quote valid?
Not every order needs a new die. A standard section may already have one. Die cost also cannot be read from the profile’s largest dimension alone: section complexity, tolerance, and alloy all change it. Ask the mill: does this section already have a die? If new, how much, and how is it amortized? Who owns the die, and can you take it if you change mills? What is the design life in tonnes or shots?
How the numbers work
Worked example
Illustrative only. The goods line starts from an assumed mill FOB, not a price we calculated. Freight, duty, and inland stay in their own segments so the boundaries stay clear.
| Assumed mill quote | FOB 2,950 USD/t (example, not a collected quote) |
| Shipment | 25 t |
| Goods value | 2,950 × 25 = 73,750 USD |
| Ocean freight + insurance | Priced by lane (Shanghai → Ho Chi Minh in this example) |
| Import duty + VAT | By destination country and HS code |
| Port charges + customs brokerage + inland haulage | Estimated separately |
Goods + freight and insurance + after-import charges (three segments, not one blended number)
The calculator above fills the lines it has. Official rates we have not retrieved are left out of the total; they are not filled with 0 and not replaced with another market’s number.
The 4-step landed-cost workflow
- 01Pick alloy, shape, and volume
Choose 6063, 6061, 6005A, or 7075; pick extrusion / sheet / plate / coil; enter shipment size in kg.
- 02Select origin port and destination
Pick from Shanghai, Ningbo, Tianjin, Guangzhou and 11 destination ports across VN, TH, PH, ID, AE, BR, MX, US.
- 03Pick the Incoterm target
FOB / CIF / DAP / DDP — the calculator includes or excludes freight, insurance, duty, AD, VAT accordingly.
- 04Read the live breakdown
Read each line and the sources under the result. Official rates we have not retrieved are left out of the total; they are not filled with 0 or with another market's number.
Common questions
Where do the numbers come from?
LME 3M and our FOB Shanghai composite drive the base aluminum price. Freightos FBX drives ocean freight (with deterministic regional multipliers for lanes not in the FBX index). Duties for US/EU/VN/BR come from the 2026-09-02 official-schedule catalog (USITC, EUR-Lex, Federal Register, MDIC). Some official rates are not in our catalog yet: Vietnam MFN, Brazil TEC, Vietnam's 2531 company AD table, and the US 301 per-HS mapping. We leave those lines out of the total rather than filling them with 0 or borrowing another market's number, so a result covering those markets is incomplete — check the official tariff schedule before you commit. MX/ID still read the live tariffs table. VAT/PPN/IVA from each country's tax authority where we have a stored row.
Does the calculator include anti-dumping duties?
Yes, when an official residual rate is on file. US extrusions use the China-wide AD cash deposit 86.01% (Federal Register 2026-16753) plus CVD all-others 7.37% and Section 232 50% where the heading is in scope. EU extrusions use the 32.1% all-other residual from regulation 2021/546. Vietnam's 2531 company table was not retrieved this round, so Vietnam anti-dumping is left out of the total — not filled with 0 and not replaced with a republished 2.85–35.58% range. Brazil has no AD on Chinese extrusions on the official in-force list; Brazil MFN/TEC was also not retrieved, so it is left out of the total and is not replaced with another market's number. A result covering those markets is therefore incomplete; check the official tariff schedule before you commit.
Why is freight to Vietnam estimated rather than direct?
The Freightos Baltic Index publishes 12 main lanes; intra-Asia, AE, and SAEC lanes are derived as deterministic multipliers of the closest published lane (CN→US WC for VN/TH/PH/ID, CN→N Europe for AE/BR). The multiplier and rationale are shown on every estimated row.
How do I get DDP-vs-DAP delta?
Pick DDP — the calculator layers VAT (8% VN, 17% BR, 16% MX, 11% ID, 7% TH, 12% PH, 5% AE, 0% US) on top of CIF + duty + AD + CVD. Switch to DAP to see what the importer-of-record pays separately.
